Remembering Portapique

Kylie Hebb — Sat, 18 Apr 2026 12:41:53 +0000

From Kylie: Today marks 6 years since the horrific events that took place in Portapique.

When I first started in radio as a brand ambassador at Q104 FM, I didn’t fully understand just how powerful this medium could be. Later, when I joined Rewind 89.3, I was trying to familiarize myself with the industry and the station when I came across this episode of the Sound Off Podcast . I’m not even sure I had met Darrin Harvey yet—but I remember being moved to tears more than once.

That was the moment it really clicked for me—the power and importance of community radio. I remember thinking it was something everyone needed to hear… even if it’s not the kind of thing you casually share every day.

Today feels like the right time.

If you’re not sure what to do with yourself today, like me, I encourage you to take 35 minutes to listen, remember, and reflect. To look back on the tragedy—but also to recognize how far we’ve come. This all happened during a time when we couldn’t even be close to the people we love. And somehow, we made it through.

I would be doing a disservice not to acknowledge the deep respect and admiration I gained for Darrin and his mission through this. I didn’t grow up listening to him, but I understand now the incredible comfort he provided during those long days, weeks, and months to this community and beyond.

The same goes for the entire Q104 team—the hosts, programmers, creative team, producers, traffic coordinators, and everyone who played a role in creating something so meaningful while also grieving themselves, navigating uncertainty, and experiencing it all in real time alongside us. I truly can’t imagine what it must have been like to be in the world of radio on that day.

And thank you to Matt Cundill for capturing these moments and preserving them. At the very least, this episode changed the trajectory of my career and how I view and value radio in an instant.

Today, we remember.

A Day to Listen

The Path Here | The Path Ahead

On Tuesday, September 30, Rewind joins hundreds of radio stations across Canada in A Day to Listen, in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Produced by the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF), this special 12-hour broadcast runs from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time.

This is the fifth year broadcasters have come together under this initiative, amplifying Indigenous voices, stories, and perspectives. The first A Day to Listen was launched after the discovery of 215 unmarked graves at the former Kamloops Residential School in 2021, and saw more than 540 stations participate across Canada.

Why “The Path Here | The Path Ahead”?

It’s been ten years since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada released its Final Report and its 94 Calls to Action—marking a crucial moment for all of us, Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike, to reflect on our past and what lies ahead in reconciliation efforts.

On this day, we will feature conversations with Indigenous leaders, Elders, creators, activists, and thinkers. Together, we’ll explore questions such as:

What has brought us to this moment?
What does progress look like—and where do we still have far to go?
How can each of us contribute to meaningful reconciliation in our communities?

We invite all our listeners to pause, listen deeply, and commit to the work ahead. Reconciliation isn’t a moment—it’s a journey.

Tune in all day — 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
